About this course

  • English and Tamil, no subtitles
  • Books: Ember and Ember, P. Nath

This is the recording of GENE 2026, the institute's live batch for the UPSC Anthropology optional. It is not a studio production. The classes were taught to a room, filmed by a fixed camera facing the teacher and the digital board the class is taught from, and the recordings keep the recaps and asides of a live class. Most of the classes so far were recorded at 360p, where the board can be read but looks soft; Class 11, at 720p, is the clearest. More classes are still being added.

Who this course is for

  • Taking Anthropology as your optional for CSE 2027, from its first class
  • Could not sit in the GENE 2026 batch, and want the classes on your own hours
  • Reading Ember and Ember or P. Nath, and want the same ground taught in a class
  • Comfortable with teaching in English and Tamil; there are no subtitles

Frequently asked questions

Is anything drip-fed, and do classes added later open for me?

Nothing is released on a schedule. Every class on the course is open from the first minute of your access, so you can take them in the outline's order, in the institute's class order, or go straight to the one topic you came for. Classes added later open for you as soon as they appear in this outline, for as long as your access runs.

What language are the classes in?

English and Tamil. The teacher moves between the two as the class goes on, which is how it was taught in the room. Some classes are mostly English. Others have long stretches in Tamil, with the technical terms in English. There are no subtitles on the recordings. If you are unsure whether the mix suits you, watch the free Demo class first. It is a real teaching class of the batch, an hour and forty-eight minutes long. Much of its middle is in Tamil, and it costs nothing.

Do I need to have studied anthropology before?

No. The batch starts at the beginning. The Orientation class explains what the optional asks and how to prepare for it. The Demo class starts from where humans came from, and then Class 1 takes up the theories of evolution. What the course does assume is that you are preparing for a Mains paper: the classes work towards written answers, and several stop on a previous-year question. The Demo is an introduction, a story told from the Big Bang to Darwin; the later classes are denser, with anatomy and fossil detail. Also know what the course holds today: the evolution, primates, fossil hominins and prehistory of Paper I, the first of the anthropological theories, and one class of Paper II. It is not yet the whole syllabus, and it should not be bought as if it were.

What if I run out of views on a lecture?

The lecture shows a button, "Ask for more views". You can add a reason if you like. The institute answers on that same lecture, and nothing is sent to your inbox, so look for the answer there. The two free classes, the Demo and the Orientation, are not counted, so they never run out.

What is NOT included?

These are recordings of a live batch. This course has no live class, no answer evaluation and no test series. The teacher mentions notes, handouts and model answers sent to the live batch's group; they are not part of this course, and neither are the textbooks named in class. These lessons have no reading material or worksheet. The lectures stream in the browser and cannot be downloaded for offline viewing. Most of the recordings are 360p and already light on data, and on a 2G connection, or with the browser's data saver on, the player can drop them to 240p. There is no AI tutor with this course, and the recordings have no captions.

Are more classes coming?

Yes. GENE 2026 is still being taught, and each new class is added to this course. It then appears in this outline for everyone whose access is running. We do not promise a date or a number. Buy the course for the classes listed here today; anything added comes on top of them.

How long do I have access?

For 365 days from the day you enrol.

Can I try the course before buying?

Yes. 2 lessons are free to preview — look for Preview in the curriculum.

How do I pay?

Through Razorpay, at checkout — card, UPI, net banking or a wallet. Your course unlocks as soon as the payment is confirmed, and a receipt is emailed to you.

How many times can I watch a lecture?

You can watch each lecture twice. Pausing, skipping and changing speed cost nothing; watching a part again uses up some of your second viewing. Free preview lessons are not counted. A lecture plays on one device at a time: starting it in another tab or on another device stops it in the first.

Can I study on my phone?

Yes. Courses run in the browser on any phone, tablet or laptop.
